Movie Recommendation: Tamasha (2015)
Many Bollywood movies in the last decade or so have had characters portrayed as someone, who got effected by the “invisible hand” of India’s education system and the socio-economic situation. Although, some of those movies made it to the top lists, cause of the timing and the cast. I am a bit shocked by the fact that ‘Tamasha’ did not get much praise and money that I think it deserved.
I am sure you have a friend who is not doing the things in life that he/she is probably meant to do, who slowly killed off the curious & carefree child that once had the audacity to try out new things, but now is moulded by the “invisible hand” that our generation is cursed with.
After having watched some amazing movies over the years from all over the world (Thanks Internet), one naturally gets spoiled and it’s quite easy to be picky about movie, find issues such with the timing / character development / cinematography and others. But sometimes, some of it does not matter. So it’d be easy to cherry pick many things in this movie that will probably make it far from perfect, but it did not matter. I am not a big fan of unnecessary filler songs/musicals in movies unless it really adds up to the story. But, for Tamasha, all of them felt very appropriate as the story progressed. Also, the love interest plays an important role in story arc, and in weird way teaches how a good partner can enrich your life and how important it can be.
Like music, I believe perceptual subjectivity contributes quite a bit for liking or disliking stories and it comes down to the question of “How does it make you feel?”. This movie did hit me on a personal level and made me reflect on many things about my decisions in life. I believe that this is an essential movie for the 90’s born Indians, where most of us have followed the herd mentality while taking important decisions in life, and none of it by our own fault. If you are that person, this movie might just help you a bit to open up your eyes and reflect.
